The 250 room French Renaissance chateau is the creation of George Vanderbilt who sought out an entire community of craftsmen, including Richard Sharp Smith, the same architect that designed The Black Walnut Inn.

The Great Outdoors

Asheville offers a wide diversity of outdoor adventure and is the ideal destination for an active and healthy getaway. Adventures range from a zipline between mountaintops to taking a ride down the rapids on the Nantahala River, a waterway that has produced dozens of Olympians and hosted four world championships. Stalk trout on the nation’s first fly fishing trail or raft, kayak, or canoe down the French Broad River through the woodlands of Biltmore Estate. Spot some of the area’s nearly 300 species of birds, from hooded warblers and indigo buntings to horned owls. Check out world-class gardens at the North Carolina Arboretum and the Botanical Gardens.

Transylvania County is known as the “Land of Waterfalls”, and is located within driving distance, to the southwest of Asheville. With the rock mountain terrain and high rainfall totals, Transylvania is the wettest county in the state, making this area the best in Western North Carolina for waterfalls. Transylvania County is home to over 250 waterfalls, including some of the most popular in the entire state and several have been featured in movies such as The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans.

Asheville is known for its vibrant art scene and historic architecture, including the dome-topped Basilica of Saint Lawrence. The Downtown Art District is filled with galleries and museums, and in the nearby River Arts District, former factory buildings house artists’ studios.

Historic Asheville

Whether it’s Asheville’s own renowned author Thomas Wolfe, Zelda Fitzgerald, the Grove Park Inn, or the Biltmore House and Gardens, Asheville has a rich history and past that offers lot’s of things to explore and enjoy. From an architectural standpoint, there’s also lot’s to see here. The Art-Deco S&W Building has been repurposed and come to life again, the Grove Arcade, the Basilica of St. Lawrence, and of course the grand Biltmore house are but a few of the beautiful styles of architecture that can be found in Asheville. Montford, the neighborhood that The Black Walnut is in, has many incredible houses that are also worth a walk about.
